January 2008 Archives

booksmall.jpgPosted here is an mp3 recording of an interview on CJAD/CFRB Montreal/Toronto with Peter Anthony Holder, which was broadcast last Wednesday morning (1:30 AM to about 2:00 AM). We talk about the book and some of the more bizarre devices. Take a listen, Peter is a great interviewer and his show is fun and interesting; focusing on unusual stories of the day...
idlehands.jpgA man who believed he bore the "mark of the beast" used a circular saw to cut off one hand, then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said.
story
A scene straight out of Idle Hands - right down to the microwave detail. Excellent quote by the sheriff's Captain - "That kind of mental illness is just sad."
Indeed.

Super-Sized Autopsy Tables Needed For Big Corpses

The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office has a new addition: An autopsy table that can support 1,000 pounds.
The standard used to be around 300 pounds. But more medical examiners said they need larger tables to accommodate larger bodies.
story
On the bright side, these tables can eventually be recycled as buffet-style dining tables.
botonbot.pngLevy says that by 2050 we'll be creating robots so lifelike, so imbued with human-seeming intelligence and emotions, as to be nearly indistinguishable from real people. And we'll have sex with these robots. Some of us will even marry them. And it will all be good.
story
Here's hoping that these future sexbots will not be running the contemporary version of Windows, as the built-in feature of crashing at an inopportune moment could be particularly disappointing, not to mention embarrassing.
